The nutritional requirements of treponemata. V. A detoxified lipide as the essential growth factor supplied by crystallized serum albumin.

چکیده
A chemically defined medium has been described (Steinman et al., 1952) which, supplemented with crystallized serum albumin, suffices for the cultivation of the Reiter treponeme. As will be shown here, the sole function of the serum albumin in this medium is to act as a detoxifying carrier for an esential lipide, similar to its role in the cultivation of the tubercle bacillus as described by Davis and Dubos (1947).

Evaluation of Nutritional Status in a Teaching Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Background:Extrauterine growth restriction remains a common and serious problem in newborns especially who are small, immature, and critically ill. Very low birth weight infants (VLBW) had 97% and 40% growth failure at 36 weeks and 18-22 months post-conceptual age respectively. The postnatal development of premature infants is critically dependent on an adequate nutritional intake that mimics a...
متن کاملSerum albumin is essential for in vitro growth of activated human lymphocytes
The effect of human plasma, the plasma protein fractions of Cohn, and crystallized serum albumin on the in vitro growth of human lymphocytes activated by concanavalin A (Con A) or bacterial lipopolysaccharide was compared. It was found that fraction V or serum albumin (SA) is essential for growth of activated T and B lymphocytes. The other plasma proteins have no effect. The growth response of ...

A chemically defined medium (CC-494) was used to study the nutritional requirements of three spiroplasmas representing three distinct serogroups: flower spiroplasmas [Spiroplasma floricola and FS (SR-3)] and honeybee spiroplasma [HBS (AS-576)]. Glucose, fructose, and mannose were utilized by all three spiroplasmas. In addition, the honeybee spiroplasma could ferment trehalose, FS (SR-3) could f...
متن کاملSerum Albumin as a Food for Human Tubercle Bacilli.
Before the development of egg mediums, serum was used extensively as a medium in the cultivation of tubercle bacilli. Eastwood in 1907 reported that horse, bovine, dog, and pig serums supported good growth of stock cultures of human and bovine tubercle bacilli and also served well as isolation mediums. Since the introduction of egg mediums there has been little use of serum as a medium in itsel...
